Thread Requirements

We hope you find the following information on thread helpful but please don't overthink this or worry about bringing threads. If you choose to make your project at home, actual sewing during the class time isn't even necessary. Patrick provides tutorials on all aspects of the project so you can go home armed with the information you need to do the project at your own pace. With a larger class space this year, we're going to give sewing in class another shot but you won't have enough time to actually finish your projects there.

Not all of the threads are provided in the project kits. We will have some sample threads for you to try and your kit may come with a spool of thread for you to use for one aspect of the project, but you will not be finishing your project in the class period so you will need to eventually have your own thread. The fabrics used in the projects may not be the exact same ones shown in the project photo, but colors will be close.

When you're ready to choose additional threads:

You will need 40 wt rayon thread OR Magnifico Trilobal Poly thread for finishing your fusible appliqués with satin or blanket stitching. Patrick most often uses a thread that matches the appliqué but may be a little darker or a little lighter to offer contrast and make the thread more visible. You may use one thread color to do all of the satin stitching or choose a thread to match each appliqué color. If you choose to use one color, black or darker neutrals create a nice outline.
You may use the same thread in the bobbin or any bobbin weight thread.

For satin stitching/applique finishing, we prefer Madeira, Robison-Anton and Sulky brand Rayon threads or Superior Thread's Magnifico Trilobal Poly thread.

For piecing, we prefer MasterPiece from Superior Threads.
